If you're comparing quotes from metal fabricators for a Niagara project, "CWB certified" will show up in most of them — worth knowing what it actually guarantees before taking it on faith.
The Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) certifies both individual welders and fabrication shops. W47.1 covers carbon and stainless steel welding; W47.2 covers aluminum. It requires passing welding procedure qualification tests and is maintained through ongoing audits and re-testing, not a one-time credential.
Municipal building departments across the Niagara region typically require CWB-certified welding on structural steel before signing off on inspection. An uncertified fabricator risks a failed inspection after the steel is already installed — expensive to discover late, especially on a seasonal hospitality or winery build.
A fabricator who answers all three without hesitation has the paperwork — and inspection history — to back it up.
