On a Niagara winery or hospitality project drawing set, "structural steel" and "architectural metal" cover different scopes — and knowing which you need affects both your quote and your timeline.
The load-bearing frame: columns, beams, joists and connections. It requires engineered shop drawings and structural inspection sign-off, and typically has to be in place before other trades can proceed.
Feature stairs, railings, wine-cellar racking, trellises and stainless finishes — work that's as much about appearance as function. It's usually installed later in the schedule and, while guards and handrails still need to meet code, it doesn't carry the same structural engineering load as the building frame.
A request that separates the two lets us scope engineering time accurately — structural steel needs an engineer's stamped review before fabrication; most architectural metal work doesn't. It's especially worth separating on winery projects, which often mix both in the same build (a production building's structural frame alongside a tasting room's feature staircase).
